Please help me buy a new inkjet printer! It should have good photo reproduction and cost under $300. Also, the refills should be cheap! ;)

Your best bet is an Epson Photo Printer! They print incredible photo-lab quality photos if you use photo paper :Q I am constantly amazed by my printer, and I have the lowest one(the 780), get the 870 or the next one up and you'll crap your pants! ;)

It also prints very sharp text quite fast.

A color cartridge lasts me about 25-30 full-page 8x10 photos in the highest quality setting. I pay $26 Canadian for each cartridge so I bet it's $15-$20 US. Black ones last a lot longer.

Do you have a clogging problem with your Epson, Kami? I am thinking about getting one of the new Epsons that print huge photos but I hear a lot of people complaining about clogs. Plus the chips on the ink carts.

No, they don't clog because they pump out half the ink cartride through the heads every time you turn them on :)

Never had one problem with my Epson yet! If the thing gets clogged if you don't use it for a while, there is a cleaning option where the printer fixes itself. As for the chips in the cart's, I hear those inkjet refilling kits come with a floppy disk which essentially hacks the chip in the epson cartridge and makes it think it's full again. I haven't tried it yet, but my buddy did on his Epson 777 (not a photo printer) and it worked fine.

The refills fill about 6 times and cost less than 2 regular cart's I think, but I am not sure if they make them for the photo models. Guess I'll have to check.

WHat are these ones that print big photos that you speak of? How big?

That's exactly what I'm worried about. :p

The HP's are ok but their cartidges are damn expensive, compared to the Epsons. The epsons do have very good quality though. Which Epson Photo seems to be good for under $300? And how speedy will it bleed a full page?

Huh? :Q if this happened then it would be quite messy inside the printer ;)

I think Epson 1280 does 13x19"s, but I might be wrong on that. It's a shame HP doesn't make a large format printer that's affordable because I've never had anything bad to say about my HP printers.

Next time just blame your mess on your printer ;)

Seriously, I don't know about the newer, higher end Epsons, but I know their low end stuff is crap. I got like 20 pages of text out of a POS 480sx or whatever it was before it went empty...they said not to turn the printer off (it didn't have a switch), but hell if I'm going to leave it on 24/7, especially when it causes interference with my tv :/ I promptly sold that POS on ebay :)

Hahah yeah that's a problem with old ones. The new ones are pretty good and Epson doesn't rape you on cartridges as much as other companies, plus you can usually find epson stuff including epson photo paper for cheap at places like costco.

I got 100 thick photo paper sheets for $29.95 CANADIAN at Costco!

Stylus Pro 10000... Yes, this is nice, but at $9,995.00, it's just slightly above my original $300 price range. :p

I have a Canon S600........... so far no problems :D I print moderately and I just had to change the colour ink carts after 7 months of use (the black is still going strong).

Cheers,

Is that true you cannot use generic ink replacement for Epson printer? I remember I read reviews that you cannot buy generic ink..only genius ink replacement.

If ink cost is a concern, you best go with Canon's current products. You get separate (and quite large) ink tanks for EACH color, with low cost 3rd party ink available. They have high resolution print heads with many nozzles for good speed, which unlike on the Epson printers are easily replaced and don't cost twice as much as the printer itself :/

For photo reproduction you should get a six-color model. S820 (2400x1200) might fit your bill. This one also does the zero-margin trick.

Bargain hunters look for the recently discontinued S450. This one is 1440x720, carrying two print heads for black and CMY color. The black-only head can be replaced with a "photo" head for six-color photo printing.

You missed out. Dell had the new Canon s9000 wide format (13 x 19) photo printer for $309. It was a misprice, but Dell is honoring the orders. It is now back up to $499, but there are a lot of codes / discounts that may bring it down further. For a cheaper model, see the s900. The s900 is the same printer, just not wide format. Ink cartridges are cheap. They have 6 individual carts, which can be bought for $15 for the 6-cart set from tylermartin.com (not OEM, but recommended by many pros). Check out the forums at dpreview.com for more recommendations.

i'm impressed w/ what i've seen from canon's new line (s750/s820 specifically). The individual carts are nice. I've read they are a bit picky on photo paper (ie, the cheaper epson paper doesn't work quite as well as canon.. altho i've heard of another alternative.. "jet" something.. 3rd party). It also seems to depend on the person it seems.

Epsons i hate because they suck up so much ink on startup.. that and mine kept clogging. eventually it clogged to the point of no return. They do produce excellent photos if you use it a lot for that.
