Can anyone recommend a cheap but decent tripod?

most any kind of tripod should work assuming your camcorder has a regular tripod mount screw. All of the one's i've ever seen could tilt a lot forward/back and left/right. Something else you may want is one with a built in bubble level.

Most cheap ones have the friction fold over clips to hold the legs in place. better ones use a rotating/screw stop. I like these because the clip ones can ware out and loose holding force. The screw ones are just tighten to hold.

I got a nice enough amateur one off Newegg fom Dolica a month or two ago, was on sale for one of their Eblasts and I'm pretty happy with it. It's served me well so far.
