In the 600 dollar range or less...its really only for writing papers, surfing the net, and burning dvds...so a dvd burner would be nice.

You can go with Dell or HP. Really up to you... I urge you to save up the extra $100 or so because for a little more you can ensure a decent notebook that will last you awhile. It would be a good choice to choose a notebook with an Intel Core Duo processor.

Here are some quick looks.

Unfortunately Dell only offers a weak Pentium M with hardly enough RAM to keep you going at around $600.

HP has some of the same options however their notebooks will be using AMD Turion 64 processors. Now, nothing wrong with this but the Intel Core Duo is where it's at right now...
