Obviously the ipod earbuds suck...and I'm not a big fan other the othre types...can anyone suggest a fairly nice set of earbuds?

depends on how much you want to spend, the shures are always nice but if you only have 20 bucks or less to spend, get the senn's mx

what is your budget? and whats your criteria? sound/isolation/non-isolation/on-the-go/etc.

the e5cs mentioned above sure are awesome, but they will run you a pretty good amount of $$$. etymotic er4p seem to still be the favorite for sound-price ratio. wont break the bank either.

EDIT: i forgot to mention that both the e5cs and the er4ps are very nice. ive owned both, the er4ps first. they sounded very very good, but they definately needed at least a miniamp to be somewhat 'amazing' (some say it sounds muddy without the s-cable, but i found it sounded decent even without it) i ended up getting rid of them because i couldnt get used to the comfort for prolonged periods of time (but then again, i hate ALL Earbuds, so it could just be me) same reason why i got rid of the e5cs, although they did feel better than the er4ps.

yeah, around 30 was what I was looking at...I didn't know earbuds were that expensive 🙂 but anyways, I just bought the mx500's from amazon for 13.98 so I can't complain. I'm not an audiophile (but I know the ipod earbuds suck)...the other earbuds that were suggested were very expensive (but nice)...

thanks for the responses 🙂

I think the e2c's give best bang for buck while still maintaining a reasonable budget.

E2C, E3C, E4C, E5C ... what's your budget?

Earbuds suck when compared to open or closed headphones.

QFT

I plugged in my Senn HD600's again after about a year of fidgeting with various canalphones, closed cans, and other open cans and I was blown away by how much better the HD600's were. Granted none of the others cost as much but the difference is out of proportion with the cost.

Yea, I have Sony, Bose, Senn headphones too. Of course, the best are the Bose, but they were expensive. The Senn were inexpensive and still blow all canalphones I've tested, including E4C.

Shure is the brand you want. But you neever mentioned your budget.

You coulda had the sony mdr-51s for 30 bucks. Way better than the Ipod stocks, but sucks when compared to the higher (100+) dollar buds, like er, or sure.

I'm happy with my E2C's. I think the 4/5C's would likely be overkill.

4 are $300, 5 are $500?

Exactly. I'd say the sound isolation is as important if not more important than the actual qulaity of the sound producing hardware inside each bud. I doubt that the 4's or 5's have much better sound isolation. Having said that, I've not tried them out.

The only issue I have with the shures/other canalphones is the noise you get from within your body. For example if you're walking you han hear the dull thud of each footstep, or if you eat some crisps (potato chips) the crunching noise is deafening...

Everyone's plugging Shures, and while they're good buds, you can also look at the Etymotic er6i, the e2c's closest competitor. In comparison, the er6is have better highs and are more neutral & revealing, but less bass and a microphonic cord (tap it, hear it).

You do pay a price for the small size / portability.

People do listen at home & in other noise-free environments, you know, popularity of open headphones is proof of it. Music isn't just something to drown out the world in noisy places, it's something to enjoy and be savored. Agree though, that for the headphone out of an ipod, anything expensive is probably overkill.

I hear the ipod earbuds are top notch. money can't buy better sound.

No they aren't, the included ones with the ipod hurt after a while.

And they don't stay in your ears.

I picked up a pair of Sony earbuds. They came with three different sized rubber pieces to fit your ear. They actually go in the ear so they won't fall out and the sound is much better.

I have a pair of the Etymotic er6i's and they are ok. Noise isolation is incredible, they are comfortable to wear, but I don't like the lack of bass. Their highs and mids are good though. I've read good things about the Sharpm MD-33's and for only $39, could be worth a try?
