A country would be stupid to import a net of a certain crude and export some of the same, so in this case it must be the specifics of the oil or the refining and I think it's the latter;

I believe that the US imports gasoline and exports diesel, at least on some level or for some price benefit, because the UK and possibly other nations have their refining mix messed up such that they need more diesel and we need more gas, so we trade.

Here come the apologists already.

Any business that "messed up" as you put it should be shut down and taken over immediately.

socialism at its finest.

When does the government do anything more efficiently?

Look at the passenger railroad system.

Look at the shipping ports and the extra costs that the government allows.

I am looking at them.

At least they are not "Pirates of Capitalism", raping us at every chance.

While I don't like socialism, let me rebut your point by mentioning the following four words: United States Postal Service. No private company can deliver a letter for $0.42 across the country in two days.

I'm willing to guarantee that if our mail system was placed wholly into private hands we would be paying $4 for a 1st class stamp by now under the "Pirates of Capitalism" corporation system we now have in place by the Republicans.

You guys are dancing around one key fact: Iran and Iraq have more excess capacity than anyone else in the world to produce crude oil and refined products - even more than the Saudis.

We've been messin' around over there for over 20 years.

In that timeframe oil exports from Iran and Iraq have been reduced over 40%.

Yes, but what is different the last 6 years with prices more than doubling?

Total Republican oil man and corporation rule raking in ungodly profits.

It took them 20 years to reach "Mission Accomplished".

And if we paid $4 for a stamp under a repub admin, we'd pay $4 for a stamp under a dem admin too.

Oh, the logic of partisan hackery.

This is pretty much pure BS on my part but I think 'we' (being Amuricans :) ) have been soaked to provide working capital for the expansion of Big Oil infrastructure in India and China.

The US is quite capable of slashing oil demand by 20% or more in the next 10 years. We did it in the 70's and we can do it today.

What I fear as oil prices continue to fall prior to the election is the focus is lost on ridding/reducing our energy demand for carbon-based fuels. People will be doing backflips of joy while they pay $3.30/gallon for their 500hp SUVs and pickups (and Big Oil will take their obscene 10's of billions in profit to build more refineries and infrastructure in China and India).

As a side 'benefit' of high-dollar oil I think we were sending a "Welcome to the Party, pal" message to China. As noted the US is quite capable of reducing demand (and has done so) but rising energy prices have a much more dramatic impact on China's emerging 'world-class' status ...

Most of the refined products we export are sent to Mexico. Mexico sells us a TON of oil. In return we refine some of it and sell it back to them.
