The Koss KSC 50 seem to be the favorite headphone for about $20, find a KSC 35 if you can, they are discontinued but considered better.

you can buy typical sony or philips earbuds for 9.99 at your local target.
not bad for the price.

i have the sennheiser mx400s. use them with my ipod. sound great. you can find them on-line for about $15. considered to be one of the best bang-for-the-buck buds out there. or try the mx500s (same as the mx400s but with a built-in volume control). mx500s are $19 at amazon.

hope this helps.

Thanks! I really like my Senn 570s (but everyone in the audiophile world thinks they are crap). I think I'll go for the mx500's.

You'll want to get the Koss earbuds called The Plug

Take these, get some of those cheap foam earplugs that squish to fit in the ear. Drill holes in them and replace the earpiece with these. Sensational sound for less than $20.

Here are the details of the mod.
I only did the earplugs and not the dampening foam, but it still sounds pretty dammned good.

Ahem - allow me to veto this suggestion! I bought a set of "The Plugs" and they were totally worthless. Admittedly I had a hard time evaluating the sound since they tumbled out of my years as soon as I moved a muscle, but I was unimpressed with what I heard during the split seconds that they stayed in my ear canals. I have used The Plugs, two different sets of Sony earbuds, my stock iPod pair, and Sennheiser MX500s, and the MX500s win by a country mile. You can either a) buy The Plugs, and spend an hour modding them to achieve decent performance, or b) buy MX400s or MX500s, and have great performance out of the box, for the same price. You do the math.

Don_Vito, thanks!

Does anyone know of any Brick & Mortar retailers that sell the Sennheiser MX-500 ear buds? Or, are they a "mail order / Internet retailer" type of purchase. Thanks!

If you had bothered with the mod instead of dismissing them immediately you would have found them to be quite good. If it was falling out of your ears then you weren't getting a good seal and were not getting good sound. Also the plug is a LOT more comfortable than traditional models. I can't wear the other ones for very long before it makes my ears hurt. I can listen to the plug for a heck of a lot longer.
