I think the artist was referring to "dick and jane" in particular. Those books portrayed a seemingly perfect lifestyle for the average middle class family which was steadily increasing in america in the 1950's. To gain this status in america one had to, in a sense, worship a false idol (i.e. capitalism) who would then, in return, convert the real world (or ones own world) into an unsustainable dream world (i.e. suburbia).

interesting. but they didnt really worship the idol. they used it for their own greed.
