I have been reading a few books on the subject. They don't seem to be very helpful though. How does one learn to do such a thing?

You wont learn how to do it with a book. Look for seminars that are routinely held for those who want to learn. The process is not difficult, but you do need to practice quite a bit before you're able to achieve any good results. Also, some people do not make for good hypnotists regardless of training for various reasons; their voice is not commanding enough, dont speak clearly, etc...

I was always skeptical when a stage hypnotist makes people do crazy things, such as believe they are sitting on a tack whenever he claps, stuff like that.

people don't normally do crazy things when hypnotized. It's more like entering the human terminal mode(imagine going to start->run : telnet Jane Doe). You can't make people do things they wouldn't normally do, but you can plant suggestions to think about or give them forced choices. Consequences of actions don't come into effect, but decision making ability does.

On the topic, I don't think it's really possible. It took years for POWs to be brainwashed, to think that you could achieve an easily influenced state with mere words and shiny objects seems off to me.

Then again, I could be wrong

I read an article in a medical journal about operating on people under hypnosis and them not feeling any pain. It appeared to be genuine.

Some people are harder to hypnotize than others. Like someone said, hypnosis is just a way to plant suggestions into someone's mind.

Skeptics often believe that hynotists are phonies but I've seen guys cry after watching a video of himself "entertaining" the crowd.
