You mention that you started from a formatted drive but have you tried a virus scan on it? Just guessing on that but it could cause a problem. Even formatting will not kill one in the MBR.
Also are you having problems with the IDE controllers listed in device manager. It could be that if the system is not seeing those properly then it is not seeing the drives right too. This could lead to errors with the swap.
Try booting to a floppy and run scandisk, see if anything turns up there, also, try deleting the swap file when booted to a floppy (if it shows up from the c: prompt) and restart windows in safe mode and try setting the swap file size from safe mode.
Thanks for the input. I'll try a virus scan. Tried the safe mode thing, same resultz there. Guess it could be having trouble reading the drive correctly, although all other aspects of windoze seem to report the correct free space. There is a swap file in window dir, it's about 28meg. I'll try deleting it, see if that helps.
