Hi there

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on recommended limits (both temperature and multipliers/fsb) for the 1700 XP Chip? What's the max/medium for this chip.

I have an Asus A7V266-E with Crucial 512mb PC2100.

I had a quick blast at overclocking last night, and took a stab at the fsb, changing it to 140(@1.54Ghz), that seemed to work fine. But what temp should I be cautious over? 60deg C for Chip? 35C for m/board?

Any words of advice would be grand ;)

Cheers

It depends on couple of factors: what kind of CPU cooling do you have, highest FSB your Crucial DDR module can run stable at, and how lucky you are with that particular processor. :) If you are not going to unlock the multiplier, and overlocking the XP 1700+ via FSB alone; I would try to bump the FSB up to about 145MHz, and voltage up to about +.05-+.075v; run few hours of Prime95, play some 3D games, see if you experienced any instability.

Safe CPU temp IMHO, under full load, should be in the low 50 degree C. If you are at 60 degree C already, perhaps you need to look into a better HSF for your AthlonXP processor.

Thanks for that, much appreciated.

At the moment I have no additional cooling other than a coolermaster HSF (hence me not running at high temps for too long) which regulary runs @ 63degrees C at normal speed. I guess this could be a bit high. Would you recommend installing another better HSF or adding another chassis fan to remove warm air from the case? The reason I ask is the fact that it took me bloody ages and two sore thumbs to get the heat sink on in the 1st place..... :)

I was also thinking of clocking my Gf3 500ti too....

BTW - my 3DMark2001 score at normal speed is 8099, not too bad? I wonder if I can get to 9k :D ?

U definately need a better cooling coz ur temp now at 63C idle. Case cooling helps as well. Check out: -

1. HSF like Alpha 8045 or SK-6 or other decent cooler.
2. Scrap off the termal pad on the HSF & Get some termal compound as well (ASII reccommended).
3. 1 intake fan in the front of the case & 1 exhaust fan at the back.

Some basic cooling guide.

On ur VGA card...u can try to O/C it. But not too much coz u already O/Ced the AGP port by means of FSB increment.

I talked to a guy from AMD one time and he told me that their TBird CPU's are able to survive sustained temperatures of 200F. I don't know about that but, I've been running my 1700+ @ (11x138) for 2+ weeks (24/7) w/out any problems. The temperature usually stays at about 105F using a Thermaltake Volcano V Cu (the 4200 RPM fan) w/ Artic Silver paste.

Stability depends on so many things, I hardly know where to start. My advise is to keep upping the FSB until you run into problems. The XP runs much cooler than the TBird so high temps really shouldn't be an issue unless you run your box inside a sauna or something :)

105F is in the high 30's if you convert it into Celcius. Which isn't too bad:D

I would also recommend that you get some more cooling in your case to get a hold on that temp.

I ordered an amd xp 1600+ and a ecs k7s5a mobo. I was wondering if the cpu has to be "unlocked" before I can overclock it? Are all cpus now all locked up?

XP is harder to unlock than the Athlon. Check around the forum...u'll know. However, O/Cing using the FSB has been quite successful w/ XP.

Most 1.2 & above Athlon is unlocked. All XP is locked. All MP is unlocked. Mos Duron up to 950 Mhz is locked. All new Duron is locked.
