Can anyone help with a gaming problem?

This is really pissing me off!! I downloaded Need For Speed: High Stakes back in the day when it was new and had absolutely no problems. Now, two years later, I felt like playing again so I actually bought it from a friend and the damn thing has major issues running. It worked for a couple of days but now, every time I run it, the screen flickers on and off a couple of times and I get an error message. It reads:

Abort Message: Exception caught! EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION: read attempted @0xFFFFFFFF and then a whole bunch of numbers and letters...

What the hell does that mean? Why did it just suddenly start? Any suggestions?

i had the same prollem honestly and I was lucky enough to have had to reinstall my OS soon anyways...no clue why but NFS:HS worx for me now

I did that about 2 months ago...I don't want to do it again so soon
