Can anyone help me with moving (capturing) all the information from a web site...

So I can host it on another server?

We had a guy build a web page for us at work and he has been hosting it for some time now. Charging WAY WAY too much money. Since we paid to have the site built I would hate to lose the whole thing but I have no idea how to go about moving it to my hosting site.

Can anyone guide me through the process of copying all the info so I can move it?

I don't know WHAT forum would be the proper place to ask for this help, so I'm taking a chance on Off Topic. If there is a better place, please let me know MODS, and I will gladly post it at that forum.

Thanks!

Here is the site in question.

Also it does need some updating. I'm sure the owner would be willing to make some sort of monetary compensation for any help offered.

(probably not a HUGE amount though...)

if you're paying for hosting don't you have the FTP info? can't you just login with an FTP client, copy it over to a folder and move to the new host?

Yeah, we were charged WAY too much for him building it and THEN he has been charging us WAY WAY WAY too much to host it.

Considering the amount of $$ we have invested, I would REALLY hate to lose it all after he stops hosting it...

Since you paid for it you should have the rights to all of the files, unless he is a sleazy conman. The shopping cart doesn't even work as there is nothing to buy!

Also if you dont mind me asking how much you paid for design / hosting, where here or in PM?

Did you also let him talk you into getting a .biz domain?

Why can't you add any items to the cart?

As everyone else has said though, to move files use FTP.

Does he know you want to host the site somewhere else? Because he's going to find out real soon once he finds out why there's such a spike in traffic coming from AT.

Anyways, if you have access to the FTP, which you should, you can just log in and copy the entire directory like any other directory on your computer.

Even if worst comes to worst and he shuts you down without letting you back it up, it doesn't look like it contains any database or anything, so it'll be fairly easy to replicate. All he did was put a bunch of links in to manufacturers and other sites, and some pics.

It's not that bad. Not that great, but as local retail standard goes, not that bad.

As for the OP's question: it may not be as simple as you think to move off of this guy's platform.

He built the site for you using an ecommerce package called Q-store. I don't know much about this platform, but from quick research I can see that it is an older version. The new version is called ShoppingQ.

There is no HTML front-end to this site. The cgi script generates the output you see on the home page. In order to move it you need a new host who supports QStore, and you need the original script files that he used to generate the site. You cannot get these unless a) he gives them to you; or b) you have access to the server. Even if you have access to the server there is no guarantee that all the resources needed to reproduce the site are actually on the server.

Furthermore, unless you have a contract with him stating that the $800 fee was in return for a specific "work for hire" arrangement, his view will be that the $800 was a setup fee, and that the fee depended on you running the full term of your agreement and paying the monthlies. In other words: you don't own any software, you are simply paying regular fees for the use of a service.

Just guessing, because I haven't seen your contract, but I think it's unlikely you'll get this moved. Are you sure he is overcharging you? If you don't mind, post the monthly fee.

if it's too much hassle to deal with your current webguy, use rentacoder.com and have someone build you a new site.

it's not that expensive and it might be worth it to you to be rid of this guy.

All I've seen from the OP so far is that he thinks he's being overcharged, but he hasn't said how much he is being charged, and if he hasn't gotten some alternative proposals he may not know what the going rate is. His original question about moving the site indicates to me that he doesn't really know what he has.

Um there's nothing to buy on that site.

He just is trying to assist the owner of the business because something does not feel right.

The OP is not a S/W development person.
Just look at his member status.😛

If you have static HTML files, you can download something to rip all the files.

If you're using server-side scripting, and you look like you are, you'll need access to the source files, which usually happens with FTP, SFTP, or WebDAV. If you don't have an account to the server, you will need to go through your guy.

Um, maybe so, but the site is still built using qstore. Maybe they had planned on adding ecommerce to it later.

And, looks like it's down now.

Court Jester, that's what I aspire to. /bow.

Send me a PM with either your email address and/or AIM. I may be able to help you with that.

Hopefully you have:

1) Access to the domain with the domain registrar (or the administrative contact for the domain is an email address you have control of)?
2) The username and password for the FTP so that you can get your files.
