Today, I bought a cdrw and installed it on my computer. Well, I have made 5 discs already, and while recording my 6th one, my computer just shut down, and told me to take out any media that was in my cdrw drive. I have Win2K. Then, when I restarted my computer and everything seemed alright. Well, I opened up my regular cd-rom and now it won't stop opening and closing by itself (it's doing it as we speak). I have no idea what the problem could be, can any of you help?!?!?!

Are you running a Kenwood72x drive?

A friends Kenwood did something similar to that. His tray would open on startup. It would close and then reopen all on its own. It wouldnt recognize most cd's; but when it did, we got an error message that said it needed to be cleaned or was scratched up badly.

We called Kenwood and they said to send it in.

sounds like netbus or a similar trojan... are you on a network or use any "always on" broadband? Have you downloaded any weird programs lately? If you have a virus scanner, put it through the hard drive.

I scanned my HD, and found nothing. I have the latest definition files. Does anyone else know what it could possibly be?

thanx!

I have seen a similar thing happen on older systems, i.e., CD-ROM door opening and shutting by itself, when the IDE cable is backwards. Since you just installed your burner you may want to go over your connections again. You could have Pin 1 on the cable correctly set for the burner and backwards for the CD-ROM.

Just a thought.

I had a Creative DVD drive that did that. Promptly returned it to the store where I bought it and got a replacement. No problems after that.

I had the samething happen to me w/ my scsi toshiba CD-ROM. After a marathon of "backup" about 20 dreamcast games it wouldn't keep closed. So I reboot my computer and tried closing it when posting (in the bios) and it still wouldn't keep closed. I would press the button and it would close for 3 seconds and then open again (no cd inside either). I took it out of the case, closed it, flipped it upside-down immediately and something went click and it kept closed. When I turned it right side up again it would be messed up again.

I took it apart figuring it was something mechanical that I could fix (and if I broke it I could buy a new one for cheaper than it would cost to bring it to a repair shop), but that um... failed. :(
