Can anyone help me figure out why my thinkpad won't go into standby anymore?

I have a 2 year old IBM thinkpad running win2k.

I leave it on 24-7, but only use it maybe 2 hours a day, so i like it to go into standby or just spin the hard drives down after 45 minutes or so.

I have it set to do so under power options in the screensaver tab. Thing is, it *used* to go into standby just fine....until about a week or so ago, now it never does. I can let it sit there all day and it stays running as usual. And yes , i've rebooted and what not.

Any ideas? Thanks

Couple things you should note. If you're using OpenGL screensaver, your laptop will not go into standby mode. That's a known bug with Windows 9x/2k/XP.

Also, if you manually put your laptop in the sleep mode, does it work that way? If it doesn't, that means that probably something wrong with your hybernate/standby file, however if it does, I would try to change the screensaver as I mentioned above.

Good luck,

I would guess that you have some program sitting in the background occasionaly pegging your harddrive for data. Something like a Gnutella client perhaps? You might check your startup folder and registry for anything unusual being loaded at startup. Also, have you checked your Device Manager for any *!*'ed items? Good Luck.

Peace,

2 More thoughts:

1) Is your computer connected to the 'Net or a local network 24/7? If so, try breaking the connection and see if the problem goes away.
2) Have you scanned for Viruses lately? OR Do you have virus scanning software running in the background?

Peace,
