Can anyone help me diagnose this problem?

I'll try to keep this short but give as much detail as possible:

Ok, first for specs on my computer, see my sig. Jeez, I haven't posted here in a long time, so I'm not sure if that's still there.... Alright first a little background. Originally, I had Windows 2000 on this computer. I'd been playing games very sporadically for several months, but when I did I was having lockup problems. These lockups were usually pretty random (it seemed to me), sometimes, I'd play for 2-3 hours before it happened, sometimes only 5 minutes. Anyhow, I'm cruising right along in a game and then my monitor goes blank and the power light starts flashing (just like the power saving setting), but when i look at my computer, the HardDrive light is on and never flickers. Only way to reboot is to do a hard restart. So my first thought is video drivers are wrong, so I try 3 or 4 different ones but none help.

So then I upgrade to Windows XP hoping it would help but it didn't. I used XP for several months and decided to go back to 2000. So anyhow, the problem is still there and last night I was playing an Online RPG. Had been playing for about 4 hours or so and the last 2 of which were pretty intense on the processing I'm sure. Then all of a sudden my computer just freezes which it has never done before unless the screen goes blank, so I press the restart button and it restarts. I try the game again in the same spot I was the previous 2 hours and about 2 minutes into it this time it does it again. So I try shutting the computer down completely for a little while in case overheating was the problem (which by the way, only gaps around my computer are in front and back. In back I have about 10 inches of space for venting before the wall and the front is completely clear). So I power on my computer the next time and I can't even get the POST messages to come up. My monitor keeps flickering like the computer is still turned off and the hard drive light is doing the same thing it would before (always on). So I'm thinking Video issues. I pull the computer out, open the case to cool down (it seemed quite a bit waremer inside to me than usual). In about 30 minutes I decide to give it another shot and nothing comes up again. Let it sit overnight and tried again this morning and still nothing.

If anything I've tried here is just stupid on my part, please let me know so I don't repeat those actions....

Can anyone help PLEASE!?

Well.

The PC not being able to post is bad on a good-bad scale. Time to get your hands dirty...
get in there and unhook your hard drives, pull all your cards and memory. Reboot...see if you get a post with nasty beep codes. Add memory, post again. Add video, post again. I'm thinking your going to find trouble with the video.

Other things:
clean the gunk out...make sure your heatsink isn't one big dust bunny.
be sure all fans are spinning, especially the one on your video card.
Use a single stick of memory-move em around to isolate problems if you find any.

If you get a post and windows runs, DONT drive yourself nuts trying to find a software problem...you got some broken hardware somewhere. Memory and video are the usual suspects. If you can't even get a beep-code post then the CPU becomes suspect as well.

You didn't do anything stupid as far as I can tell. Good luck.

My first thought was video as well. I borrowed the vid card out of one of my roommate's computers and tried using that as well, but it still wouldn't do anything. However, while I had the case open and the power turned on, there was an audible noise constantly... Kinda sounded like a sick onboard speaker just squealing. Also I noticed there were some diagnostic LEDs near the CPU. They were all lit up red and according to my user's manual, that means a bad CPU. I then tried removing the video card to see if it would make a different noise and it did, a high-low repeating noise. Then I put the vid card back in and the other noise. I moved around the memory testing each one in the first slot and it didn't make a difference either, so I think I've got it pinpointed to the CPU.

If that is the case, any idea why it would just go out in the middle of something like that? I checked the fans and they're all functional, even the 3 case fans I have running. Dust doesn't appear to be a problem, but I think I'm gonna order a new CPU tonight and take the fan and CPU apart to see. Also, i didn't have any thermal paste on the CPU when I put it in other than the "thermal pad" that came with the fan, so I thought I'd give that a shot too. My room is going to get rearranged as a result of this too so I can make sure the computer has a little better air circulation.

usually, one of the most single overlooked pieces of hardware is the power supply. whats the wattage and what brand? how many hoursa day, daysa week do you leave this running? do you have a good surge protector or UPS for the computer?
a crappy pws will make ur computer reboot at sporadic intervals for no good reason....

a good pws should also have 2 fans on it, one to suck in the air, and one to spit it out the back...
if teh board or cpu is fried, then it's too late to try swapping out a PWS. make sure u get a good one to take care of actually powering that lil rig of yours. i learned the hard way :D

The P/S is a 300w unit. I'm sure that's not the problem because the computer will at least try to turn on. All the lights flash on and then it just sits there. I removed the CPU yesterday and cleaned out the fan (it was fairly dirty) and then put everything back in and tried again, but it didn't make any difference.

look at the capcitors (those tall round things) and look for any that have a bulged top or crusty stuff on top. my board had the same prob you seem to have and it was b/c something (maybe crappy PWS) fried teh board. I bought a new board and this morning i have been installing it. everything seems to work fine now after replacing the board.

my capacitors look this way (only 2 of them do) and so i dont know if its related or not to fried boards, but hopefully that's some useful knowledge.

try reading what happened to me and se if it sounds familiar

Your problem sound similar. I never had an object blocking the PWS fan or any of the vent fans for that matter, but the fact that the 4 red LED lights inside were there and your monitor would say "no signal detected" also is what mine is doing. My MSI motherboard manual says the 4 Red LEDs indicate a CPU problem, so I ordered a new processor last Friday. Today it came in, I was all psyched up to get my computer going again. I put everything together, powered it on and ZILCH... Still has the 4 LEDs lit and nothing on the monitor. I'm assuming my mobo is fried and I'm going to need another...

Anyone have any recommendations of a more modern mobo that uses AMD Athlon chips and SD-Ram? All the local stores have in stock are boards that have only DDR support.

Ok, upon closer inspection as you suggested, I do have one capacitor that looks to be shot. It's got a bit of a bulge on the sides and an orange-brown crusty substance on the top. This is the capacitor that sits right beside the connection from the PWS. I'm just having a hard time believing it is the power supply if it actually tries to power on.

hah boy sounds similar.

i replaced my PWS cuz i had a Deer, whose reputation is questioned on this board often. I ordered a new Mobo, a Turbo2 which runs SDRAM, but seems to at pc100 not 133... at least i think it does at the moment.

I hope you ordered a better processor so you can convince yourself at least u spend the money on an upgrade vs 2 of same mhz cpu's. =) i ordered mine from Monarch computers - cheapest on net from reputable place (about 30 bux less than newegg; i talked to newegg and they dont negotiate prices)

i bought my enermax 350 watt pws from newegg. it has 2 fans.

i liked the turbo2 cuz i could use sdram and 200 & 233 bus amd chips.
i have the old duron in it still, but at least i can upgrade to an XP years down the line (if mobo lasts!)

it sounds like ur mobo is fried. a good pws regulates power to your comp better so im happy that i got a new one anyway.
