Here is my problem:

A user where I work is using a laptop with win 2k pro.He has numerous powerpoint presentations.
He stores everything in the My Documents folder while logged onto the network, therefore this is
his network profile.Up until this point everything opens and works as it should. He then logs off and
logs on locally, like when he is at home. When he tries to open his pp files in the MY Documents folder
he gets an error message "PowerPoint can't open c:\Documents and Settings\userx\My Documents\
Folderx\slides because part of the file is missing."If I log on locally as administrator I can open the files
no problem.

Here is what I tried:

I shared his network profile out to his local profile and assigned his local profile administrative rights.
I don't like to share anything out but I had to try something. It did not work, same error message.

Can anyone give some input on what to do?

Thanks a lot, Zip

Don't allow local login. Have him login with his Domain (network) account while the laptop is wherever...the machine should log him in with "Cached Credentials". He'll get an error message about "..unable to contact a Domain Controller..." ignore it, and he should be able use his files as he normally does. (BTW, this is how W2K is designed to work for this sort of stuff.)

BTW....sharing permissions have nothing to do with this. He's trying to access the files locally, and shares are for network access.

If this doesn't work, let me know, and we can hack around it.

Woodie I have done that already, same error. We run novell client also.So he has to put a check in the box "workstation only"
for the novell client. However on the win2k/nt tab the domain is selected.when he clicks ok he gets "no domain controller can be found.
I am wondering if the novell client is screwing with permissions?thanks for the help woodie.

Have no idea on the Novell side....

Compare the full directory path to his Normal network logon "My Documents" to the one when he's logged in "locally".
Should look like:
c:\Documents & Settings\NetworkID\My Documents
and
c:\Documents & Settings\LocalID\My Documents
or perhaps
c:\Documents & Settings\NetworkID.000\My Documents

Normally, everything from \LocalID and down is ACLd to the user-LocalID- (F/C) and to Local Administrators (F/C). You may have to re-ACL at the "My Documents" level, and add the other ID, with F/C.
