Can anyone give me some advice regarding my algebra homework?

We're past this subject, but not even 80% of our class mastered or got "algebra word problems."

Now, the problem I have is I have the hardest time figuring out how to take the word problem and decipher it into an equation.

X is three times less than Y, what would their total length be.

I know I have to find the proper "formula" to solve the equation be it D = rt and A = lw
But deciphering it into a equation is hard for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to have a hard time with word problems. The only thing that will make it better is practice, practice, practice. I do Calc word problems now easily.

If X is 3 times less than Y (do you mean smaller in value), then their total value would be Y + Y/3.

that particular problem can be translated word for word pretty much I think

x is 3 times less than y find total length(x+y)

is -> "="
3 times -> either multiply or divide
less -> divide

so :
x = 1/3 (y)

algebra could mostly be solved that way.
"is" generally means an equal sign
times, product of, doubled, tripled, etc mean division or multiplication.
plus minus equals + or -
that should pretty much give you a good start.

I think you just cleared all of my Algebra knowledge :Q 🙂

haha, I don't much remember what they tried to teach me afterwards...it's all a calculus induced blur.

Thanks for the advice, but, what if you can't study at home because you either don't have time or you're busy neffing on this forum or another? I mean it's extremely hard for me to make time, and I'm actually paying for my tuition myself. ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

When I go over it with my teacher she shows me what to do and also lets me try it by myself. I do it to a certain point where I get stuck and I get stuck on the most easiest things. It's like I should slap myself for not knowing that!@!!@~~!@!~@~!@!~#~!#~!#~!@~!@!~
