Can anyone create an "org" website??

My friend asked me about this, because a student in her class claims this is true.

I can go out and register a .com or a .net and some others, but can I go ahead and get a .org website going?? Do I need any special approval?

I was thinking ATOT.org, but thats already taken by a japanese site (j/k)

Tim

edit: sorry it is japanese

only thing is that they can revoke it if they catch you using it for profit.
.org is supposed to be used for non-profit organizations

Are you sure about that?
From Internic:

What are the rules for registration of .biz, .com, .info, .name, .net and .org names?

The .com, .info, .name, .net, and .org TLDs are open and unrestricted. Traditionally, however, names in .net have been used by organizations involved in Internet infrastructure activities and .org is frequently used by noncommercial organizations. .biz is reserved for use by businesses. For more information on .biz restrictions, please contact your registrar or visit the .biz registry operator at <www.nic.biz>. .name is dedicated exclusively to individuals' personal names.

It'd be kind of weird if they took degenerates.org away from me and gave it to a non-profit organization. 😕

If you own the .com and .net, you might as well get the .org. Even if it is revoked, the worst that happens is you lose the registration fees.

yes

i own 2 .org's and a .net

i am not a "internet infrastructure" anything

the two .org's are probably correct per the orginal intnetion. one is my family's website/email and the other is for a high school class reunion

It used to be they actually made sure the domains were being used for the stated purpose. I got turned down applying for "lostinthe.net", "the.net", "sex.org", and "huge.org" because I couldn't prove I was a network service provider or a non-profit organization about 10 years ago.

Nowadays you can get pretty much whatever you want registered if it isn't taken already.
