all that waiting, just for 0.5x multiplier?

it's your business, but I'd wager that you'll be happier sooner if you just go with the e8400, get a decent cpu cooler, and with a good overclock you will be far beyond where the e8500 would take you (stock)

whatever you do, have fun! either one is a good choice

thats true the .5 multi will come in handy for extreme overclocking on water/ln2/dice when you're already above the temp threshold and 500mhz fsb

9x460-500 should be possible with good air cooling and high speed ram

(guessing you're overclocking and have a decent motherboard)

Thanks for the info. I'm building a media center with an x38 mobo and ddr3 ram but didn't know that the e8400 was available. Had been waiting for the e8500 totally unaware that i could currently purchase the e8400. Tired of waiting, and will order the e 8400 tomorrow.

Thank you all for your responses,
pmanfred

not that it's any of our business, but if you search around there's about 99% chance you don't need DDR3, and could apply that money elsewhere to build a truly great system on ddr2

May be worth waiting for the 8500 if you can hold out..... or better yet the 9450 Quad due to temp sensors issues on these 8400 chips.
It is still possible a motherboard bios may offer a good patch....but a lot of people think the temp sensors are at fault. My 8400 is stuck at 127c but otherwise runs fine at stock speeds. I don't want to overclock at all without knowing the actual temps.
