Can anybody tell me why some people have those strings of small, colored flags in their yards?

I'm just curious. Every once in a while I see these blowing in someone's backyard. It's a string with small, square flags hanging on it. The flags are each a different color. Red, yellow, blue, white, and green if I remember correctly. I think I've also seen some that had writing on the flags. I couldn't read what it said, though.

So, does anybody know what these things are? Is it an ethnic or religious thing? I've been curious about these things for awhile, but thought it would be rude to knock on a stranger's door just to ask them. Thanks.

Probably sending subversive messages to their fellow travelers. Messages like "Happy Birthday", "Happy Aniversary", or even "Happy Fourth of July". Watch those folks, eventually you'll catch them red-handed having "fun".

I just realized what it is you're talking about. It's not that at all. When I said some have writing on the flags, I didn't mean one letter per flag. I mean many words on each flag. And it doesn't look like english, either. Of course, I know about birthday banners, etc. Don't just assume that people are stupid.

no, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about about strings of flags hanging over people's patios in their backard. Like Biggerhammer said, it looks like the things you see at a used car lot.

Sounds like prayer flags to me. It's should be a hindu/buddhist thing but it's grown into some people's cultures.

Those are exactly what I was talking about! Thanks, man. I tried googling it myself, but "religious flags" didn't get the same results.
