I just got this TV from my cousin which is like a 32'' old Sony TV which beats my 18'' by far :) One probelm is that ( the reason that they "threw" it away since their spoiled rich) is that the power button always works but randomly the buttons on the TV or the universal remote doesnt work because the TV doesn't respond, but other times it is perfect, what is causing this, can I fix it, or should I bring it to a repairman, and what kind of costs am I looking at? THANKS anandtech, this is really important :D

Yes, you can fix it. It could be that the rubber pad or spring is broken on the remote & the TV. You could try replace the pad with one that work, or find one that is similar & jimmy one together if the TV is really old. But, it is very likely that you could disable the pad on the TV, then get a universal remote to work the channels. Also, try calling the electronic stores and ask what remote that is compatible with your TV model.

It sounds like control module problems in the TV if both the remote and the control pad do not work. I havn't worked on a Sony but most newer TVs are modular. Modules are fairly easy to plug in yourself. I had a store in town that would let me try one from their stock of spares, but that was a special case, might be worth a try though.

There should be a schematic on the inside of the TV.

here are some sites to tryElectronics Repair Tips
They have a help page where you can list your problem, make sure to include the model number of the TV.

You could try this site also.

I don't have any idea what parts/modules are going for these days.

Does the universal remote work? If so you won't need to replace the internal module. I was guessing that was the problem if both the remote and the controls on the TV would not work.

It works , but as much as the front controls too, basically when they work the remote works. It like "disconnects" sometimes...

It must be something inside of the TV because the infrared (remote control) and the buttons "disconnect" at the same time.

I just found something out, when I hold down the channel button on the front of the TV and use the remote at same time it responds even right when it "disconnects"... any significance?
