Can any surround receivers do this?

What I would like is to have hdmi come out from my device to my surround receiver, then to the tv, but I'd like the hdmi to pass through to the tv when the surround receiver is off, and when the surround receiver is on to output sound only to the receiver and not to the tv. My current receiver I have to leave on at all times and manually change on the receiver itself which device to play sound thru, and if the receiver is turned off no sound is transmitted at all.


Basically I'd like to use the surround when I want to but not at all times, and would prefer not to mess around with the receiver itself to switch and do not want it running 24/7

I can't be the only one that wants this, am I?
 
for my devices i don't want to use with my surround i have hem directly connected to my tv via HDMI and a optical cable running to my receiver so i can choose whether or not i wanna use it

In 2010, Yamaha had the best implementation in this matter. It their implementation, it can be be configured so that:

-when the receiver is in standby, HDMI audio/video is routed to the TV
-when the receiver is on, only HDMI video is routed to the TV and audio is played through the receiver/speakers

Also, even when the receiver is in standby you can use the remote to switch between any of the HDMI ports on the receiver. While just about every receiver brand would allow you to select one HDMI port to pass through when in standby, very few would allow you to be able to switch between ports.

I'm not sure whether the other brands have caught up.

most will do it just not in the base models

i have a Yamaha rx-a3000 works flawlessly
 
As mentioned this is a common feature among newer (last couple of years) AVR's. Look for HDMI Passthrough in the Specs.
