Can they?I mean not shoot stuff out in defense or anything but just to shed tears. Is it a purely primate thing to cry?
Also can all mammals create a sound originating from the throat like humans?
I know this is really ot but it's been bothering me.

my kitten makes distress calls, which are vastly different than his normal noises, when he is under duress.
his eyes tear sometimes during this but i dont know that its crying so much at coincidental irritation.
he sort of always has goopy eyes.

about the mammals:
im not willing to make an "all" statement on it. i cant think of one that cant, as a group, but i have no idea.

Elephants cry and mourn deaths. Haven't you ever seen a baby elephant crying when its mother dies?

IIRC, giraffes don't make vocalizations. Someone else can google to verify (or prove it wrong)

edit: nope, that's wrong. Had to check myself. But, it's apparently a common belief.
Someone else told me that once... I believed him.

Yeah cats and dogs make different sounds when they are stressed or scared or whatever...I would classify it as crying...may not be actual tears but still crying in my book.
