Can an ubalanced disc ruin a dvd player?

Put in a DVD into my PS3 and it sounded like a lawn mower was running outside. Upon inspecting the DVD, I saw that it was nicked. Would watching that disc for 2 hours, wreck the PS3?

It could. Unlikely but not worth the risk.
