Can an AM3 MoBo be used for an old Athlon II X2 245?

Woul dlike to upgrade from sig rig but still have an upgrade path to a Thuban 1090. Can I use a "new" mobo to support this older CPU?

I would not see any problems, but make sure that the pins match on both sockets. 939 socket has its set of dummy pins at certain locations, which may differ on the newer sockets.

IM confused, in your title you say an Athlon II (which is an AM3 chip) but in your sig is a single core 939 athlon.

If you have a AII 245, yes an AM3 MOBO can be used. If all you have is the 3500+, no an AM3 mobo will not work for you.

Ok... Sorry for the confusion... I have an Athlon II X2 lying around and I'd like to buy a new MoBo and CPU to replace my sig rig. Furthermore, I want to be able to upgrade again to a Thuban 1090T.

Bottom line: What MoBo would folks recommend for both the 245 and the 1090T - I'd like to put as little money into this as possible, but not have the MoBo die on me after 1 year...

Athlon II is AM3, works in older AM2+ boards if they have BIOS support, and should work in any AM3 or AM3+ motherboard.

Ok, any specific models of ASUS or Gigabyte AM3 or AM3+ "budget" boards that anyone recommends? There seem to be so many...

It depends on how much of your rig you're replacing, really. If you're replacing most of your PC, nearly any ASUS/Gigabyte AM3 board will serve you just fine...go for whatever your budget will allow.

If you are planning on keeping the rest of your rig as-is, your choices will narrow in a hurry. Here are some compatibility things to consider:

* Motherboards with FDD controllers (and serial/parallel ports) are becoming scarce
* You'll need a motherboard with a PATA controller to keep the IDE drives
* You'll need to buy some new DDR3 memory modules -- fortunately RAM is cheap at the moment
* You have a 20-pin PSU; modern motherboards are 24-pin (see: http://www.smps.us/20-to-24pin-atx.html)

If you're going that route, get something like a ASUS M4N68T-M, and replace the PSU with something modern like a Corsair CX-430 to be safe. Add a couple sticks of whichever DDR3 is on sale and you're golden.

need to also make sure mobo supports x6 tdp (140?) for ex my mobo supports up to 95w so x6 isnt an option for me.

Thanks much folks... Appreciate all the advise.

deimos, thanks for the details. Unfortunately, I purchased the following on NewEgg before reading your post:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3907#sp

It looks like theres no IDE support but not sure... I guess it's a good excuse to get a SSD now...

Also, I never figured my PSU would be out of date... It seemed like a I spent a ton of money for state of the art when I purchased it... Hmm...
