Can an AGP 8x card be used on an AGP 4X motherboard?

I got an XFX 7600 GS AGP 8x (about $105 AR) for my old Athlon 2200+ system; the ECS K7S5A Pro can only do AGP 4x.

Will the card work? Asking before I open it so I can return it if not. I recall reading that the cards will work with the slower MB but people here can say for sure I bet.

Only time I saw one not work was with my friends old shuttle a few years back when AGP 8x first came out. He swaped ti 4200's with another guy that had agp 4x and it worked fine.

Thanks - how do I watch for voltages? I assume that means check to see if they're different (what's the best way to do that), and if so, do something about it?

FYI, I have the 256MB, hopefully they're the same, but Pricegrabber has no detailed specs on the 256MB, and the merchants site I checked only lists 8x compatibility:
Tiger Direct shows 8x only

(I also notice no one is saying that this is a terrible card to pick for the old setup, so I guess that's good, I was a bit worried it's too much card and a waste. The price seemed ok.)
