Reminds me of a basketball coach I had when I was young.
I sucked at basketball. I don't have fragile-x or anything, I just can't shoot.
I played my heart out, though. Never missed a game or a practice. I really played hard. I just couldn't score to save my life.
One game, he decided he was going to get me to score. During a foul shot, he had me go stand by the opposing team's net. When the other coach and ref asked what the heck I was doing, he asked them to just let me go, and then he instructed my teammates to recover the ball and get it down the court to me for an open shot.
Sad thing is, I tried 3 times, and I still didn't make the shot!
But, of all the sports I played poorly, he was the only coach who did something like that for me.
WHen I was in HS, I swam on the team with his kids, and one meet, I was over there talking to him, and he said "Hey, remember years ago when I coached basketball and you were on my team? What a great time that was. You really sucked at basketball, but you had to have been the hardest working player on the team. You make a lot better swimmer than you did a 'baller."
He had a sense of humor like that--he wasn't trying to be insulting.
But when I remember him coaching my team, I remember him going out of his way to help me score.
