can all the USB ports on my mobo die at once?

I've got a pretty new machine here, built it right after Christmas. Core2Duo, ECS SLIT-A v5.1 mobo, dual 7600GT vid cards, etc. Been running ok, but some occasional crashes (mostly in extreme situations - FarCry freezes a TON, and Premiere Pro crashes sometimes)

Well, today I was trying to set up my new pda phone to sync. I've had an Axim for a while, so activesync/outlook are already installed and running. When I booted up, it said it couldn't find my APC battery backup (connected via USB). Moved it to a different USB port, and all was ok. Hooked my phone to a front port, and it gave me an unrecognized device error message. Rebooted, and couldn't find the UPS again. Moved it to a front port, still couldn't find it. Tried plugging in various things and realized that all the USB ports have power, but NONE have data. If I plug in the phone, it starts charging, but nothing pops up in Windows. Can't find the UPS on any port. My axim likewise charges but doesn't sync. Plugging in a flash drive makes the drive light up, but nothing appear in windows.

Looks to me like the whole USB system died. Anything else to try? Nothing is appearing out of the ordinary in device manager - shows two USb controllers and two hubs, no error marks. Doesn't show ANYTHING as connected under any of it, even when I do have things plugged in.

This mobo has 4 rear ports, plus onboard headers connected to a pair of front ports plus a card reader w/ 1 port. All of them show the same symptoms.

I disconnected all USB devices, and then removed the USB controllers and hubs in device manager. Rebooted, and they were recognized and reinstalled just fine. Still don't work though.

Sounds like RMA time to me... Actually, either Newegg or mfg RMA would leave me w/o computer for a while. I'll probably pick a new one of the same mobo up locally and then return the dead one as defective.

Actually it sounds like a bad driver clobbered your USB drivers. Try booting the system using a Knoppix CD (or some other Live OS CD), and see if the USB devices are detected there. You may need to understand a little about linux, but not much if you have a USB thumb drive around, as plugging it in after the OS has booted will cause a new icon to be automatically created on the desktop.

I had a problem like that once, had to uninstall the drivers and reinstall, not sure what driver did it, but I think the streamline installer on my intel 965 driver disc picked a wrong chipset driver.

Tried booting knoppix - putting in a thumb drive did just like in windows - LED on drive lit up, but nothing popped up in the OS. Guess it is hardware after all.

I feel your pain dude. But I also have to say, I find this statement funny. Am I a bad person?

P.S. RMA is probably a good idea...

Got a new mobo today locally and installed it. Fixed! Everything is working now, so time to return the bad one.

It does have some overclocking in the bios, but I haven't done that yet. It's fast enough for everything I'm doing, so I'd rather not risk the stability. I stayed with the same mobo so that I didn't have to reinstall anything. The computer was just built in Dec, so I didn't wanna start over :)

Glad your problem is fixed. I love using knoppix for problems like this one as it will gives you a quick sanity check on if the problem is drivers or hardware (for 98% of all hardware out there).
