Can a Zalman 7000A-AlCu really cool a 3.0Ghz Pentium 4 in Silent Mode?!

Hi,

What exactly is a "3.06" Pentium 4? Is that an older model or something?

The thing is I am gonna buy a "Intel PIV - 3.0 Ghz - s478 - 800FSB - Box" (is that a Northwood by the way) and I want to know if it can be cooled with a Zalman 7000A-AlCu in silent mode. Thing is that on the Zalman site they mention that the Zalman 7000A-AlCu can cool "up to 3.06 GHz" P4's in silent mode, but I would like to know if that's the same as the "3.0" I described above (Northwood?)? Also, does that "3.06" model run hotter or cooler then the 3.0 I intend to buy (and what about 3.2)?!

Anybody could please explain the difference between those Pentium 4 models and which one runs hottest so I can know if the Zalman cooler will cool enough in silent mode with the P4 I intend to buy as described above? Thanks in advance!

Mike.

all are Northwood.

3.0 and 3.2 are alll 800mhz models supporting HyperThreading. 3.06 is the OLDER 533mhz model also supporting HT technology. The 800mhz models are denoted as the "C" model where as the earlier 533 models are denoted with "B". 3.06 and 3.00 usually don't have B and C on the model name as the letters just make it easier to differentiate models of the same clock speed. Since 3.0 and 3.06 are not exactly the same speeds, they just skipped it on the boxes.

Most annoying thing is seeing shops making the mistake of using the name 3.06C on their site. Very n00bish.

If that Zalman can cool the 3.06 "B" model in silence, then it should have no problem cooling the 3 ghz "C" processor as the C models tend to run cooler than the "B" models as the clock speed rises.

You'll find that a 2.8C will run noticably cooler than the 2.8B.

Thanks for the info! How come that the 3.0 Ghz "C" runs cooler then the 3.06 "B" model?! I suppose it has nothing to do with HT Technology since they both have it, so what's the reason?!

PS: by the way, is it true that a CPU with HT turned "on" always runs cooler then with HT turned "off" or doesn't that make any difference? I have always been confused about this.

Dance123,
I use a Zalman7000Al-Cu on a 3.0GHz @ 3.6GHz and the temps are at
41-44C while running SETI 24/7. Good luck.

Do you run your Zalman 7000A-AlCu in Silent Mode or do you have to set it higher?!

Anybody else who has a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz (or higher) and a Zalman 7000A-AlCu (so I am NOT talking about the "Cu" model) cooler and can tell me if you can run that cooler in Silent Mode to keep things cool or will you need to set it at a higher speed?!

Thanks in advance for all good feedback!

I've run a 7000AlCu on a 3.0C (800MHz) P4 and have had to set the Fanmate at around 8V to get what I consider acceptable cooling for the CPU. That works out to about 1700rpm. The rpm at the lowest setting is about 1350. There's very little difference in the noise of the Zalman fan going from it's quietest (5V) setting up to around 7-8V. After that you can start to hear a little more noise out of it, but it's still a very quiet HSF.
