Can a XP Pro product key be tied to a specific service pack?

I used the MagicJellyBean software to copy the XP Pro product key since I didn't have the original packaging.

I formatted the drive, stuck a XP Pro SP2 CD in, and go to the enter product key window... entered the key I copied, and it said INVALID.

I took the XP Pro SP2 key from my lappy, and it accepted that.

So I formatted again, used a burned copy of XP Pro SP1 and used the copied product key and it worked.

QUESTION: Is it possible this product key is tied to a specific SP? I tried 3 different XP Pro CD's all genuine discs that had SP2 on it, and the copied key didn't work.

My XP SP2 media required new product key's, my old XP keys won't work, so I'd say yes :)

Weird...

Another question, is it safe to install SP2?

Guess I can try it and if it pooches, I can just format and reinstall ONE MORE TIME.

Yes.

Wait, what do you mean is it safe?
Well it certainly makes your computer safer, but safe to install...yes that too.
