Can a Wireless Router work without the main computer attached?

This is probably a dumb question...right now, I have a Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless Router attached to my main computer and the cable modem. Is it okay if I were to move the main computer to another room (and add a wireless card to it) but keep the router and the cable modem in the same place?

The reason I'm asking is because now that I have a laptop for college, my main computer lies dormant in my room all day and night. I plan on donating my computer to my parents and building myself a new computer next summer. However, I want to keep the router/modem in my room so that when I do bring my laptop home, I get the best signal quality and plus, I don't want my sister messing around with the router & modem anyways.

Make your parents happy.

No Wired Computer has to be attached to Wireless Router.

Get a USB Wireless configure it first near the Router. Once it works well move it to it destination.

take a chance, upgrade the firmware wirelessly. if you want to play w/ fire, you'd never ever need a wired computer
