1. IrDA is infrared. The Elite Duo combo works on RF technology.
2. Even if your keyboard/mouse used infrared technology (which is highly impratical for devices that move around frequently), the signalling would likely be proprietary to the equipment.
Bluetooth technology aims to make things like you mentioned possible. In fact, Microsoft has a Bluetooth-enabled keyboard/mouse combo, but it's pricey (about $180 retail).
