Can a thrown baseball break your finger?

Let's say from a 6'4", 200 pound pitcher with a 90" wingpsan?

okay... what about an 11 year old throwing a softball? I was catching for my daughter and the ball got the underside of my thumb real good. I can bend it, but it hurts like a bitch to touch it.

I hate to go spend $20 to go get an xray and then be told to take 600mg of ibuprofen.

yes, it happened to my brother. We were having a catch with a baseball and somehow it hit his thumb and broke it.

It can happen, but if you can bend it I doubt it's broken.

shens. ive broken all fingers on my right hand and 3 on my left hand. some more than a few times. i could move them in every instance, even when one bone was pretty much shattered. movement doesnt signify a non break.

**I'm not a doctor** but chances are the treatment for your thumb will be similar no matter if it's broken or not. They'd probably splint it up either way, so if your co-pay is only $20 I'd go ahead and go if it doesn't start feeling better soon.

Simmer down there Dr. Dolittle. I said I doubt he broke it, not that is is impossible to break a bone if you can move it.

Absolutely you can...especially if you don't catch the ball correctly in the mit.

yeh the problem is I am getting old and I can't see the ball till it is real close... it was indoors under flourescent lights.

Shit, I had a bouncing softball break my pinky all the way down the side of my hand. Fucking ball took a bad hop in a patch of dirt in the outfield and I went to grab it barehanded because of the hop and it hit right on top of the finger and pushed it in a good 1/2 inch or so into my hand. Broken finger and broken hand were the result.

A thrown football can and will break a 12 yr olds thumb. Happened to me. Wasn't even that hard of a throw. Greenstick fracture for the fucking lose.... 8 weeks I had that cast.

It can definitely break, but a doctor won't be able to do much with it. As long as it isn't broken all the way through, just tape it up, and it'll get better by itself. I wouldn't waste the money on a doctors visit. Spend the $20 on some good beer, that'll make you feel better than the doctor will ;^)

without a doubt, it can break if it hits at a bad angle
if it's not badly broken, you should only get swelling, lots of pain with pressure - there shouldn't be any movement of the finger as if it were disconnected from the hand (if a bone is completely broken, it'll look just disconnected and floppy)

I had a broken finger (ring finger) that although was broken, was not like chopped off and hanging off to the side as weird as it might sound. I shouldn't have wasted
paying for an X-Ray and listening to the stupid doctor telling me I should definitely get surgery. I would've been fine without it.... what a douche stealing my money

The only difference is that a doctor can set it straight if needed.

I know a number of people who've broken fingers years ago and they are all messed up because they weren't set and healed incorrectly. $20 is money well spent IMO to get your fingers set properly so they heal as best as they can.

BTW-I broke my thumb once, hurt like hell.

$20 for an xray? You do know that many people in this world have no health insurance, right?

Be fucking happy that you have this option.

i'd definitely spend the $20 if it isn't getting better after an hour or so. dude, it's only $20. do you know how much it'll suck if the bones in your thumb don't set right? i don't.. never broke a bone... but if i did, i'd pay the $20....
