Yep, my brother is getting an appartement and wants to use cable and split it between he and his roommate. Not much money so he wanted to use a switch instead of a router. can it be done...

You can do it, functionally, no problem at all. Not having some kind of firewall / firewall process leaves the two computer exposed to the wicked evils of the Internet......

Find a software firewall you like and use it, you won't be completely covered, but it's way better'n nuthin'.

(Don't forget that you'll need two addresses from the ISP, or run connection sharing ....which may or may not be a bad thing, depending on whose machine is giving up the resources to perform the share.)

Generally you have to pay your ISP for extra IPs so it would be cheaper in the long run to buy a router or do ICS on one of the PCs.

Like reicherb stated, sometimes it costs more per comp. I know AT&T charges $5 per extra comp per month. I run 4 machines so........:D
