can a stock ti4600 overheat??

I'm getting lockups in games, especially graphics intensive ones like UT2K3, Battlefield 1942, Unreal 2, No One Lives Forever 2, etc. My specs are as follows:

IWILL KK266R mobo
Athlon 1.333 Thunderbird
512MB RAM
Xtasy Geforce4 Ti4600 128MB
SB Audigy
2 hard drives
2 optical drives
400 watt Power Supply
WinXP Pro

Nothing is overclocked, and I can run the computer for days in just windows and the occasional MVP Baseball 2003. Its never locked up in baseball. All the settings are cranked to the max for all games, and they run perfect, but for those heavy FPS ones, all of a sudden everything locks up and I get a high pitched squealing hum from the speakers. It did the same thing when I disabled the sound in BF 1942 (minus the hum, but still locked up), so I don't know why it could be the soundcard.

My old graphics card was some 32MB ATI one, and I never got any of these problems until I got the new card, but then again I wasn't cranking every game up to the max either. I had a LAN party this weekend and we played BF1942 and it was locking up probably every 10-15 minutes for me. I turned down the graphics settings in it but the same thing happend...going along then all of a sudden locking up. I got a bigger CPU heatsink and fan, upgraded to the 400 watt PSU, and just swithed out the RAM for two brand new sticks. The mobo BIOS is updated, and I'm at a loss. The event viewer doesn't even show anything at the times that it crashes. The only thing I can think of is its the video card, but I got a nice deal on this one (128MB, VIVO), and I just don't have the funds right now for a comparable one. I guess I could sell the Ti4600, but I don't really wanna sell it if its bunk, but I don't really know how I might test things any more. Can anyone offer any advice or point me somewhere I might be able to find out more info? TIA

Have you upgraded your Nvidia Detonator drivers or DirectX recently? The reason I am asking is because the same problem is happening to me. My comp locks up during demanding games, and I was thinking that it was the CPU overheating, even though I've had this computer setup for several months trouble free. Just recently I formatted and reinstalled WinXP, with lated Detonator drivers and DirectX 9.0a, so that could be another potential cause.

I have also noticed a fair share of people experiencing lockups during the same situation recently.

i think i have sufficient case cooling...nothing special, just a case fan in the front but nothing in the way of side fans or anything pushing stuff out the back except for the PSU fans. it doesn't seem like it should be getting that warm though...does graphics intensive apps create mroe heat than it just doing normal day to day work?

i just recently upgraded to the latest detonators, and have the latest directx. this happened once in awhile before with my old detonators but that was only after i'd been playing for a couple hours or so, so i just chalked it up to weirdness. but now ist like i can barely get through a half hour or so before it craps out. maybe its time to reformat and reinstall winxp......guess its been a year or so since i put it on. heh any other ideas?

sure , just because everything is working at or close to 100%. a quick way to check is take off the side cover , put a floor fan blowing in the case and try playing.somewhat noisy and inconvenient , but effective.
if it works , modify your cooling accordingly.
good luck

thanks, i'll try that. if it comes down to more case fans, is it better to have outside air blowing in, or taking the warm air out of the case? sorry, i've never really messed with cooling things much...the stock way things came has always been sufficient. thanks again

a bump and update....

i took off the side of the case and pointed a desk fan blowing into the case. it proceeded to lock up even faster than normal. so I turned the fan around so it was blowing AWAY from the case, I guess sucking the air out, and it still locked up, but took a lot longer. heres the cool/weird part. whereas normally it just freezes with the high pitched whine, this time with the fan blowing out of it, the sound started to screech and whistle for a minute till it finally locked up solid like it normal does with the hight pitched whine. so its like its overheating and i just need to take the air out of it?

thanks for the link to the cooling thread - i'll check it out, but i guess heres my question now. does that make sense that i'd need to be sucking the warm air out of the case instead of blowing cooler outside air in? and if it still does it even with the side of the case off and the fan sucking air out, what kind of case cooling would possibly be enough to keep things functioning? with this kind of setup does this situation i'm having not seem odd? do these things heat up that much? I guess I'm gonna start looking for some more fans, maybe something that can go in the slot by the video card to pull air away, and maybe another case fan for by the CPU. i dunno, crazy stuff.

if you have access to another video card i would try that .
hard to belive it's heat unless the heat sink on the video card OR the cpu isn't on correctly.
as far as pushing\pulling air through the case , some people like to have a little positive pressure. then you can use filters on the intake fans and try to keep the dust down. peronally i don't tend to have a little negative pressure in mine .make sure i get the heat out and just clean everything out once a month with an air compressor.
you can try stripping it down to basics. vid card , 1 stick of memory , one hard drive, nothing it doesn't NEED to boot up.
hammer it for awhile and if it's ok add 1 thing back in and do it again.

P.S. looking back over your first post i'm wondering about the sound card. definetly try without it if nothing else.
good luck

Another cause for trouble may be your PSU. It might be rated at 400W, but a 4600 sucks alot of power and may be straining the line voltages.

hmmmmm i took the sound card out and played through 3 rounds of BF1942 without crashing. i still had the fan on it suckign air out. i'll try it tomorrow without the fan. would that mean my sound card is bunk? or just by not having it in there its not using as much power/creating as much heat? i think my friend was having a problem with his SB audigy too...maybe its time to try the turtle beach cards? as for the PSU, how big of one would you suggest for what I have in this? i would think a 400 would be sufficient, but then again, maybe not. thanks again for all your help!

could be driver problems , have you updated to the latest SB , via and detonator drivers ? also you can try uninstalling all the software for the sound card and just install the drivers by themselves ?
i've been using Hercules sound cards lately and am very happy.
good luck
