Can a soundcard just die?

I have a Hercules Fortissimo 7.1 that I bought maybe 2 years ago. It's been fantastic but tonight I heard a loud popping and then loud hissing/chirping coming from my speakers. I'm pretty certain it's the soundcard because now windows says that the device is 'unable to start" and my speakers work fine from my on board soundcard. Does this just happen sometimes?

It happened to my vid card (G4 TI4600) a while ago, so the answer is definitely YES - stuff just breaks randomly. Look for an RMA.

My Acoustic Edge died on me one day after only 6-7 months of use. Just went dead and Windows couldn't detect it any more. Tried it with four separate machines just to be sure. Had to RMA it back to the factory.
