Can a Seagate Travan 10/20gb drive read 4/8gb cartridges?

Our seagate 4/8gb travan tape backup drive failed. We're thinking about getting the 10/20gb ver. Would the bigger drive be able to read the older smaller size cartridges? Thanx.

Not likely. Each Travan revision was not always compatible with previous revisions. Check with Seagate's web site, it's probably there. They usually tout stuff like that if it has the capability.

Do you think this means it will work or not? Seems really open ended. I'd email them but I need to know by today so I can purchase the drive and use it to back up stuff tonight. Anybody?

As long as your backup software is compatible with the new drive, it looks like it will be okay. If your current backup software isn't compatible, then hopefully the new compatible software will be able to read the old backup tapes' format. If not, then you're screwed. :)
