Can a router affect download speed?

With my new Netgear router, I get a download speed test result of up to 6000 kbps.

It was giving me some intermitent problems so I have temporarily gone back to my old D-link Dl-704 router and now I get a download speed test result of only up to 4000 kbps.

Any Ideas?

A router can effect your download speed if it gets conjusted w/ to much traffic but it shouldn't cause such a dramtic difference like your seeing unless the orginal router is really bad or old.

I would think that anything between your computer and the cable would hinder the connection somewhat, depending on the product. Are both of those routers wired?

your download speeds are pretty high, and the old router is definitely 10mbps (did they ever make 5mbps WAN ports on routers?).

At the speeds you're showing, the older router could definitely be causing the slowdown.

Yes, both are wired.

The D-Link is 5 years old.

Sure it can... routing packets creates a lot of overhead. Have you tried a firmware update for your D-link?

Routing = slow
Switching = fast

Bad ethernet cable somewhere along the line? I've crimped some bad cables before that worked but with very slow thoroughput. Putting a new head solved the problem.

Well I replaced my Netgear router for a new Netgear router and speeds are back uo to 6000 kbps.
