Can a power switch freak a computer out???

Just installed an old IWILL KK266 mobo into a new case to upgrade a sister in law from a HP Pavilion 350MHz. I got the case from Newegg, just a cheapie steel one with a 350W PSU. Anyhow, after installing the mobo into the case with drives and cards, I discovered the little plastic tab that activates the power switch had been broken in shipment. I took the face off the case and pushed the switch with the tip of a pen and it powered on...for about 3 sec then shut down. No post, no beep, nothing but the fans run for 3 sec.

Switched out the PSU, same thing.

Moved the mobo, CPU and cards to the old case. Works great! (whew, didn't fry the mobo!!)

Move the mobo, CPU and cards back to new case...same problem.

Can a faulty power switch cause the computer to abort power up???
 
I suppose. Since modern ATX switches are momentary switches, I believe, if it were "sticky" it could turn the computer off again.

I had a friend with a computer with a broken switch. But his switch never turned on. He would just short the wires momentarily to turn his computer on and off.
 
me and my friend did this one, ok YOUR problem MOST LIKELY is, you know those gold things you got in your screw package that came with the case? they should be gold, cause all the ones i have seen, they have two ends, one end a male end, that goes into the back of the case, you have to screw all the gold things into where the motherboard will go into, except you have to match the screwholes on the side panel of the case (the one that you open up is opposite of the one you need to screw the gold double-sided screws into) and then, the other side, is where you put the mobo up against the gold screws, and there is a female part the the screw, this is where you screw the motherboard in to the gold screws.
i'm trying to make this as clear as i can, just think of it as two walls, but the walls cannot be touching EX. the back panel (Steel/whatever metal) and the motherboard/chips and whatnot sticking out of the motherboard, again, THEY CANNOT BE TOUCHING, they have to have a space in between.
THE REASON: because your grounding the power out of the motherboard, when me and my friend ran into this problem, his board would turn on for about a second, quit, and then when we pulled it out seemed to work fine, anyhow, i hope this is your problem, because it is generally easy to fix, GOOD LUCK! 🙂

Yah, thot of that...every hole that matches my motherboard has a standoff, AND I am using the little red papery grommet thingies between the screw and the mobo too. In addition, it works in the other case. I also reseated it twice in the new case. I suppose it could still be a short, but I don't think so.
 
hah! It IS the power switch. I pulled the connector off the power switch pins on the mobo and shorted them with my screw driver. power supply started right up! HOWEVER, it didnt post, even after clearing CMOS and starting again. So I pulled the little black channel that supports the wires and power/reset switches off the case fram and switched the reset wire with the power wire. Touched the switch and shazam, posted beautifully!!! hot damn, now i'll be able to sleep tonight...

Does anyone know if the little power switches and wires are pretty standard from case to case? I guess I can jury rig something, but I'm going to replace the power switch wire and the reset switch wire, as both of the little plastic tabs on the end are broken.
