I had a power surge in my PC the other day that I thought only fried my modem. When this occurred, my modem started to smoke. I took it out, and received no video. On top of that, My CPU fan wasn't spinning at all. So I figured it got the motherboard also. I replaced the motherboard with a brand new one along with a CPU and new power supply just to cautious.

After I re-installed all hardware and connections, I noticed my case lights wont come on. I also noticed that i have no power to my CDROm and floppy. I am not sure about the harddrive, however.

Now this is a brand new board, CPU, adn Power supply (300 W). I reset the CMOS on the board, and still nothing.

Is it possible that all my components are toasted? Or am I missing something pretty simple? Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'd say very likely but all depends on how bad the surge was , which you'll never know.

Have you double checked to make sure everything is connected correctly ?

Also do you have another stick of ram or a video card to test if your original ones are bad or not ?

Even if you don't have a video card and ram you still should get some activity going such as the cpu fan and hard drive spinning up along with your case lights .

I worked in control systems design in the 70's. We got a controller back that had most of the traces lifted off of the circuit board by a lightning strike that arced right through the power supply. Smelled awful.

Go to minimum configuration - Motherboard, cpu, video, power supply and drive. You may even want to take the mb out of the case and lay it on a plastic bag or cardboard. If your fans and drive don't spin then you probably have a bad ps or mb.

If it does work then put it back in the case and try again. If that works, then add one component at a time.

After you get everything working, then invest in a good UPS or at minimum a quality surge suppressor. The good ones give you equipment replacement guarantees if a surge takes out your system.
