I have a 275W PS connected, but sitting outside of my system chasis. I installed a low-noise, "low-flow" fan, in my never ending quest to reduce my systems noise.

My question is, would it be allright to run the PS without a fan, having it outside of my case?

Not advisable; even though it's outside the case, it's still enshrouded in it's metal chassis, correct? The fan is there to keep a steady supply of cooler air blowing over the output transistors and the transformer. The PS doesn't "know" it's not mounted within a case. As long as the metal shroud is around it (and that's a good idea...there are seriously high voltages in there!) you need a fan.

Can it be used, yes. For how long, I don't know, as the heat will probably kill it. If it really overheats and has no thermal protection otherwise, it could possibly start a fire. So it's not really advisable. ;)

Sure, you can use it without a fan...for about five minutes, then you'll be buying a new one :)

Seriously though...if you really need to cut down on noise, use a Panaflo L1A in there. That's about as quiet as you'll be able to safely get it.

OK, I have a 250watt PS just laying there. I'm game. I cut the fan wire so it won't run and hooked up (7) 80mm fans on it. It doesn't seem to be getting hot. Well, I will post back and let you know how long it will run or which I think, it will be fine. One thank this PS is sitting upside down on a chair so air will vent through the grill on it which is normally down in the case.

OK, You are right. It worked for about 15mins. Then shut down. Well, I guess I have to much time on my hands and a 250 watt junk PS. So know everyone does for sure it won't work!!
