Can a poorly performing wheelmouse effect system performance?

This seems crazy or maybe just coincidental, but I changed out a super crappy basic mouse with another basic mouse and now my system seems to have speeded up. Is this possible? It kept sticking really bad!!! I switched it out and now the screen changes seem much faster. Not just the obvious, but now while I'm on the internet it seems much faster with the same speed connection. Just curious.

Well, considering that the mouse is constantly being polled, I suppose that really crappy mouse drivers could negatively affect system performance...

I didn't change out the drivers. Just switched out mouse. Thanks for giving this your consideration. I know it seems like a crazy question but I was just curious if anyone had experienced or ever heard of such a thing. Thanks

Do you know if windows is using the same drivers, though? Thanks to plug-n-play, it may have switched to different drivers without any user intervention. That's really the only thing I can think of, I don't see how else a mouse could affect system performance.

Crappy mice are famous for degrading performance...does your system occassionally halt for a few seconds for no apparent reason?

Bet it is the mouse...and it is not the driver, it's the actual hardware (usually something is going out or defective). Strangely enough, the MS Explorer Optical mice seem to have a high defect rate after about a year; it seems that the wire connections come loose inside the mouse sometimes so communication is broken and re-established constantly. However, MS customer suport is great about this...they shipped my dad and my friend a replacement overnight without even asking for the defective mouse to be returned.

Thanks! Yes, my system was constantly locking up. I was forever having to use the task manager to cancel unresponsive programs! The hourglass would just sit there for the longest time. It has only been a few days but these problems seem to have gone away now that you mention it. Who would have thought a measly mouse could cause so much havoc. Appreciate your response.
