Can a PlayStation 2 be connected directly to a monitor through a component video / VGA adapter?

I have had my PlayStation 2 connected to my 22" LCD through an AV / VGA adapter and a KVM switch. TBH the quality of the output of the AV / VGA adapter that I have is good but you would expect the output to be at least as good as that of a TV, but that's not that case. In addition, the AV / VGA adapter that I have can't withstand progressive scan input to it, many games such as Gran Turismo 4, Tekken 5 and Mortal Kombat Armageddon have an option to output video in progressive mode (to an HDTV of some sort supporting 480p). Now I am getting tired of the minor quality issue with the output on my LCD and I want to get the best quality output without having to pay through the nose. And I am not in the mood to experiment with another AV / VGA adapter as I can't return the one that I have anymore.

So I think my best option would be to get a component cable for the PS2 and hook it up with a component / VGA adapter and then to my LCD through the KVM, that way I can bypass transformers and boxes and stick with direct connections.
I think this should work and I can't see a reason why that wouldn't, unless someone can point out a mistake in my logic.

The parts that I am looking into buying form eBay are bellow:

-component couplers
-PS2 component cable
-Component to VGA adapter

I need to be sure that I am not going to have an issue of whatsoever with this before I order the parts, so is this going to work right away or not?

Will not work.

If it did, everyone would be doing it and nobody would care about monitors like the 2407 that have a component input.

Long ago when I didn't know what I was doing, I got a similar cable since I wanted to try it out for myself since I figured it might work.

I just hooked it up again for you and took a picture to show the results:

I get basically grayscale but in green and the aspect ratio is messed up. (This is a 2.35:1 movie)

These cables are for use with projectors and such that have a VGA-type input that can accept a Component video signal through the same input and understand it.

A standard monitor will not be able to do this.

:( I thought it was too easy to be true, thanks for clearing it up YoYo.

But what would you suggest in my case? I like using my monitor for everything it saves me space and makes my life easier. I have 3 PCs hooked up to it and the PS2 and I want to be able to not only get good quality output from the PS2 but also something that would support progressive output.

You can either get a new transcoder that is able to take component input and give you output greater than 480i, or you can get a display that has component input.

A transcoder looks like the best option, as I was searching around, I found this they are saying it works for the PS2 and other systems, I would need to see if I can find that in the US somehow, otherwise I would need to get it shipped from asia.

Another option this one seems to support progressive scan too, but the conversion seems to be done from the RCA inputs instead.

What do you think?

I would recommend looking for reviews of them to see user comments about what works best rather than just looking at specs.

I think transcoders have been known to work reasonably well, though I've only heard about them. The other way doesn't work though.
