Can a person use DSL over a home network with just a switch?

Just talked to a guy who claims he has 6 computers networked together with DSL and he is only using two switches (apparently the DSL cable is just plugged into a port on one of the switches. Is this possible? I thought a router was necessary for using highspeed internet access over a network.
