i know nothing about pdas so this might be dumb, but i am looking for a portable device that reads plain text files. if so what is absolute cheapest one i can find? i just want to read text files (books) on it, nothing else matters.

yes, all the palms and ppc's can (don't know about other OS's). Cheapest new PDA available is Palm Zire (around $90). Then grab iSilo (free)

previous generation Palm m100 and m105 may be around the same price and much easier to read (Zire cuts too many corners; no backlight);
