Can a PCIe x8 go into a PCIe x16 slot?

I have a PCIe x16 slot and my card that I am going to get is PCIe x8 is this backwards compatible?

physically yes. But also keep in mind that most physical x16 slots on P35 based mobos are only capable of x4 speed. So if your x8 card demands x8 bandwidth, then sticking it in such limited x16 slot will hinder the card. If you have an x38,x48-based mobo, than you're good

I have no idea what an x38 or x48 mobo.

It runs a core 2 duo if that helps

^ that's an x48 based mobo. It has 2 x16 pcie slots. either slot will give you full x16 speed. you're good to go
