Can a PC power supply be used outside the case?

I have a really wierd question. I have a Dell 8100 and my Radeon 9700pro seems to be causing my system to reboot everytime I play a video game. Can I just use an extra power supply sitting on the floor (or computer table) to power only the 9700pro? It sounds like a wierd solution, but I can't see why it wouldn't work. Are there any risks I should know about? Thanks!

The video card gets its power from the AGP slot, so I don't see how you'd be able to just use a power supply to power it. 😕

Unless the card has an extra power connector which the 9700 Pro does.

sxr7171, how would you turn on the PSU, since it wouldn't be connected to the mobo? I suppose you could do the trick where you short two of the wires from the 20 pin ATX connector, but that seems like a messy solution to a problem that shouldn't be happening in the first place.

Huh. I looked at a picture of the 9700 and didn't see the extra connector. Must've missed it. Anyway, the other thing you can do is use a connector from another machine that does have a motherboard. This would work for diagnostic purposes, but certainly isn't a long term solution.
