Can a NIC cause a cable modem to reset?

The past few days I'm getting random connectivity drops, but I'm not sure if its my NIC (onboard) or my cable modem..heres what happens

1.When Im surfing the internet or playing games online, itll just randomly stop, at this point my cable modem lights are responding normaly.

2.about 10 seconds later, I get a "network cable is unplugged notification", and my cable lights will all stop, then itll have a start up phase where each light will light up.

3.when its done with the light sequence, lights go back to normal and everything is fine again.

this happens every 30-60 minutes...

now can my NIC cause my cable modem to reset like that? Ive had this modem for about 5-6 years, and its been going strong since a few days ago, I dont have any idea why it would just do this...

I seriously doubt so. Most likely signal quality issues. I onced unplugged the coax from the cablemodem - it rebooted as soon as I tried plugging it back in, which isnt suprising as the copper just tapped the port a little.

Cable modem losing power maybe. Does power light go off? That's what happens when I unplug it and plug back in. Lights go out then come back on. Unhooking the cat5 doesn't shut all light off.

I had a cable modem die and it exhibited this type of behavior. It was pretty tricky to diagnose, since it wasn't constant and the connectivity would be fine for hours. I was pulling my hair out over it for a few weeks changing out NICs, adjusting settings, and flashing/resetting my router's BIOS until I borrowed a friend's modem to test it out. After this, I replaced the modem and it has been fine since then.

Edit: I even had the cable company run some sort of diagniostics against my modem on their end and it showed up fine. I had almost agreed to risk them charging me $50 to send a tech out until I tried a different modem. Now, my cable modem works and I don't pay to rent it from them every month.

That is sync loss, not power loss. Even though all the lights go out and start flashing.

Mine does that on occasion. I would call the cable company up and have them send out a tech to check your lines and modem.

My friend had the same exact problem and they replaced his modem and splitter. Problem solved.
