Can a new refrigerator be transported by its side?

Did you have the fridge on its face? Back? Or side?
Which side? If on the side, it'll be fine if it was on the side so that the discharge tube is up. But, if it was on the side the discharge tube is on, then oil can get into the discharge line, creating an obstruction. As olds said, don't turn it on for a while & you'll probably be fine.

Let it stand upright for a while before you turn it on.

The oil in the compressor could have filled the area above the piston. hydrolock = bad.

I think you've already proven that it can be done. Listen to what the others have to say if you're wondering if you SHOULD do it.
