Can a linksys DSL router w/integrated switch be used as a plain old switch?

Here's the deal. I've got everything I need for my network except the external dsl modem. Once I get the modem, I plan to have my network as the following:

Internet > Modem > Router > Computers.

However, I may not be getting the modem for a while. I was wondering if the following setup would enable me to simply share internet access:

Internet > Computer with internal DSL modem > router > other computer.

The computer with the internal DSL modem is running win98 on a p2 350mhz.

If I download some internet sharing software, will I be able to have the router act as just a switch, and let my "other computer" access the internet?

Hi, u dont have to download any software from the internet to do that. Just install the ICS that win98 have and disable any service of dhcp, dns, etc in the router. Because the ics will do all that.

Good Luck

THe answer to your question is yes.
If you download Sygate, you can setup the router to route all packets through a lan ip, such as your Sygate/linux gateway.
Would you want to? Heck no, it's easier to just go ahead and point straight to the ICS/sygate/etc computer (like "me" said), it's slower to bounce everything through the router.

It's useful, however, if you want to dial up when the broadband connection goes down; you can connect through the 56k transparently to your users. (although they WILL notice that it's a *lot* slower... 🙂
